Unlock Epic Budget-Friendly Adventures: Travel Tips for Black and Brown Families

travellovelegacy

Planning a family vacation can feel like navigating a maze of expenses. But here's the exciting part: you don’t have to break the bank to create unforgettable travel memories. In today’s rapidly-changing economic climate, it’s easy to think travel is out of reach. However, that's furthest from the truth. There are countless opportunities to stretch your travel dollar, from scoring amazing flight deals to using travel rewards points. Ready to unlock budget-friendly destinations for your family? Let’s dive in!

While there are plenty of online resources to guide you, here’s the golden tip: Travel arbitrage. It’s the best way to save big without compromising on experience. Let's explore how this can make your family adventures more affordable!

Travel arbitrage is choosing a destination where your dollar can go further. It’s the ability to take advantage of currency exchange rates by travelling to countries where your local currency can buy more. As I type this, I chuckle at a recent Instagram reel that travel influencer Oneika Raymond posted. Titled “Us thinking of ways to save money on travel”, Oneika, her husband and daughter stand in a cobble stoned street and with a snap of her finger, her daughter disappears. Funny and cute, but it hits you on the nose. In the caption, Oneika offers several budget saving tips with the one that is the topic of this blog post: “Travel where your money goes FURTHER”.

Throughout the years, I have noticed this key piece of advice in online forums and touted by other family travel big-wigs like Monet Hambrick of the Traveling Child and the Kay of the Mom Trotter. Heeding this sage advice has allowed me to have one-of-a-kind experiences in places like Colombia and Morocco where I enjoyed such luxuries as having a private driver for cross country transportation, through the Atlas mountains and to see far reaching places like Chefchaouen, the Sahara desert and Fes within a short period of time, eating in fine dining restaurants, hitting up a Design Festival in Medellin where I hobnobbed with some of the cities' top designers and curators alike, and taking in the views of the historical centre of Cartagena from the vantage point of a horse drawn carriage. Sublime!

Travel arbitrage allows me, as a solo parent, to experience a blend of both low-cost and elevated activities while keeping my wallet intact for when I return to my budget-busting reality of living in North America (the irony right!).

Recently, I came across a Yahoo Finance article about the 30 Cheapest Countries To Visit With Family, and immediately scoured the list to see what undiscovered budget friendly destination that I was unaware of, to add to my bucket list.

After reading through the article, it got me thinking about which of the listed countries would be best for Black and Brown family travellers. If you’re a traveller from a marginalized background, travel while beautiful and transformative, has its many drawbacks for individuals belonging to these groups.

While there are many online articles from reputable sources that purport the perfect list of ideal locations for Black and Brown travellers to visit and a separate list for articles similar to the Yahoo Finance which gives its readers recommendations on budget-friendly destination, there aren’t any that offer BOTH: i.e., the intersection of budget-friendly and Black and Brown friendly family travel destinations.

And so, this got my wheels turning! I’ve taken it upon myself to create one: a listing of budget-friendly family destinations suitable for Black and Brown family adventurers using information from the Yahoo article and other sources. Here’s how I did it!

Discovering Affordable Adventures: Top Budget-Friendly Destinations for Black and Brown Family Travellers

I drew inspiration from the Yahoo Finance article which listed 30 family-friendly destinations renowned for their affordability. To curate this list, the article utilized a systemic approach where they used all the countries on their 50 Most Popular Countries in the World in 2023 list and then noted the one-week trip cost for two people for each country, as cited on Budget Your Trip’s website. Additionally, they sorted the countries according to the total cost of a week’s trip for two people.

Taking these results, I delved deeper and sourced articles from other reputable online resources like BuzzFeed, Viator, Parents, World Nomads and Allianz Travel that listed top destinations that resonated with Nlack travellers for offerings of family-friendly experiences and cultural heritage. I then took it a step further and cross-referenced all of these sources, resulting in a curated selection of countries that offer a perfect blend of affordability, cultural immersion and family-friendly experiences for Black and Brown families.

Exploring Family Treasures: Affordable Adventures for Black and Brown Families

Without further adieu, I’m excited to present my curated collection of budget-friendly adventures crafted specifically for Black and Brown families, ranked in ascending order of the total spend for a week-long vacay for two persons. The list includes the reported one week-spend for two persons plus tips on low to no cost family-friendly things to see and do in each location. More importantly, research has shown that 54% of Black travellers are more inclined to visit a destination if they see individuals of similar background in travel advertising (MMGY Global). Similar to this idea, I included the names and Instagram handles of Black and Brown family travellers who have visited each country, offering additional sources of inspiration, perspectives and tips.
